Theme:  The Charism of Benedictine Leadership

We tried something new in 2007 by having two main presenters who were with us for three full days of study and reflection on this important topic as it applies to leadership with and among our oblate communities.  We believe this afforded us quality time for listening, learning, reflecting and responding in an atmosphere of comradeship that sparked renewal and refreshment.

Presenters:

Abbot Peter Eberle, OSB is a monk of Mount Angel Abbey in Mount Angel, OR.  He currently serves as Abbot President of the Swiss-American Benedictine Congregation and Formation Director at Mount Angel Seminary.  In the past, he has served as Abbot, Prior and Novice Master of his community as well as a faculty member of Mount Angel Seminary.  He has also served as Associate Pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in Portland, OR.  Abbot Peter holds an STL from St. Paul’s University in Ottawa and STD in Moral Theology from Academia Alfonsiana in Rome.  Over the years, he has preached retreats to a number of monastic communities.  Abbot Peter brings us much experience of living the Rule of Benedict as monk and leader in various capacities.

Abbot Peter’s presentations included talks titled:  Exploring some models of Leadership, Leadership in the Rule of Benedict and Responding to Leadership according to the Rule.

Sr. Jacquelyn Ernster, OSB is a member of Sacred Heart Monastery in Yankton, SD where she has served as Prioress, Council Member, and on various committees as well as History Professor, Academic Dean and President of Mount Marty College in Yankton.  After her term as Prioress, Sr. Jacquelyn spent time at Hawkstone Hall, England in a renewal program and five and one half months in Nairobi, Kenya doing volunteer work.  She is currently the Executive Director of ASEC (African Sisters Education Consortium) with offices on the campus of Marywood University, Scranton, PA.

Sr. Jacquelyn presented at the 2005 NAABOD conference and returned at the recommendation of those who heard her in the past.  We appreciated her sharing the wisdom she has gained from her life experience as a follower and leader of the Rule of Benedict.

Sr. Jacquelyn’s presentations included talks titled:  Qualities of Leadership--Active Listening, Qualities of Leadership--Discernment and Qualities of Leadership--Humility.
